Milkha Singh was born in 1939 in Ludhiana, Punjab, India to a Punjabi Sikh family in a small house in an upper-middle class neighbourhood of the city and was educated at Mayo College and Government College for Boys, Lahore. His first love as a kid was cricket, but as a very young boy, he picked up the game of running. He is also the only Indian runner to win an individual gold medal in three consecutive Olympics (1956, 1960 and 1964). The story opens with Milkha Singh talking to his mother about his dream of one day becoming an Olympic champion. When she asks him what he will do when the day comes, he replies that he will run with all his strength to win gold. His mother's attitude changes by this moment and declares that "I think you are crazy". She tells him that competitions are for losers who can't handle success. She tells him that he needs to find a proper job and forget about running. He grows up into a very ordinary young man, interested in girls and partying. In the Punjab of the 1950s, Milkha Singh is a cricket lover from his childhood. His father wants him to be a proper man so he gets him married as soon as he graduates from Class 12. As his marriage ends after seven years, Milkha begins focusing more on his running career. In spite of winning medals for India, Milkha Singh remains an ordinary citizen – he earns a paltry sum of 1000 rupees per month by running in competitions all over India and abroad – until he wins a gold medal in the 1958 Asian Games. cfa1e77820
